First celebrated in 1994, LGBTQ+ History Month originated in the United States and was founded by Missouri high school history teacher Rodney Wilson. October was chosen as the month for celebration since October 11 is observed as National Coming Out Day. The month also commemorates the first National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1979.

On the Hilltop, the observance and celebration is uniquely known as OUTober,a programming series presented by the LGBTQ Resource Center and a variety of campus partners and organizations during LGBTQ History Month.
